Cosmic Colliery / Glofa'r Gofod
‘Cosmic Colliery’ [welsh translation - Glofa'r Gofod] involved working with ex-mining communities in the Rhymney Valley in South Wales, to speculate on the possibility of their local, abandoned Penallta Colliery becoming an underwater astronaut training centre. Through a combination of performance-based activities and interviews, I worked with people and communities surrounding the colliery and through a short film, documented the aspirations and tensions that had arisen in the pursuit of an astronaut training centre.
This work was produced during the Design Museum's Designer's in Residence programme in 2015.
A year after this project had happened, a radio documentary was produced by Hannah Loy for BBC Wales - It features interviews with the people that were part of the project.
